Vitamin C

Gum disease prevention is closely linked to vitamin C.  Vitamin C is required for the development of collagen, the ground substance between our cells that gives tissues their integrity, and our gums are fragile tissues to begin with, so they need lots of collagen.  Our gums are exposed to an array of nasty bacteria.  Infection and disease in the gums is much more likely if your vitamin C intake is not optimum.  It is very important to take care of your gums, by brushing and flossing on a regular basis and using mouth washes.  A great way to take care of your gums is by increasing your vitamin C intake.  If you experience bleeding gums regularly, consult your dentist.  Bleeding gums can also be a symptom of scurvy.  If you feel like your teeth might be getting longer, that is a sign that you’re gums are receding, and in turn exposing more of your teeth.  Vitamin C can greatly increase the health of your gums.  Consult your dentist if you are concerned about the health of your gums or for more information on preventing gum disease.
